The long-touted DOJ inspector general’s report on James Comey’s bizarre antics as FBI head was finally made public yesterday, and it’s safe to say that it feels more than a little underwhelming.

Oh sure, it catalogs plenty of wrongdoing, but backs away from accusing Comey of intending to do harm…in much the same way Comey himself gave a ludicrous free pass to Hillary Clinton despite her demonstrable panoply of high and low crimes.

The report, which we admittedly haven’t read in full owing to actually having A) a semblance of a life and B) no faith whatsoever in the DOJ, calls Comey’s actions “extraordinary and insubordinate” – which sounds more like the title of a bad Matt Damon/Ben Affleck film than the final words Comey should hear as a cell door clangs shut behind him.

The report of Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz undermines the basis for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, because its conclusions suggest President Donald Trump was not obstructing justice in firing former FBI director James Comey.

The report, released Tuesday, concludes that former Comey was insubordinate in his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. That echoes the reasons given by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in his memorandum to the president last year recommending that Comey be dismissed, which he was.

Every lie has some truth in it. Comey’s book, A Higher Loyalty, his frequent claims of allegiance to American ideals, are true, as he sees it, if not as he tells it. Men like Comey and Mueller believed that the real threat came not from Islamic terrorists, but from our overreaction to them. They believed that Bush was a threat. And Trump was the worst threat imaginable who had to be stopped by any means. 

What Comey and Mueller are loyal to is the established way of doing things. And they conflate that with our national ideals, as establishment thugs usually do. Neither of them are unique. Washington D.C. is filled with men and women who are registered Republicans, who believe in lowering taxes, who frown at the extremities of identity politics, but whose true faith is in the natural order of government.

Mueller and Comey represent a class. And Obama and Clinton were easily able to corrupt and seduce that class into abandoning its duties and oaths, into serving as its deep state against domestic foes.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodies? It’s the old question of who watches the watchmen that no society has found a good answer to. And the answer is inevitably that the watchers, watch themselves and everyone else. What began as national security measures against Islamic terrorism was twisted by Obama and his deep state allies into the surveillance of the very people fighting Islamic terrorism. 

Spygate was the warped afterbirth of our failure to meaningfully confront Islamic terrorism. Instead, the political allies of the terrorists and the failed watchmen who allowed them to strike so many times, got together to shoot the messengers warning about the terror threat. The problem had never been the lack of power, but the lack of will and the lack of integrity in an establishment unwilling to do its job.

After 9/11, extraordinary national security powers were brought into being to fight Islamic terror. Instead those powers were used to suppress those who told the truth about Islamic terrorism.

FP: This book is a history, but it is also clearly relevant for the contemporary debate. Isn’t that true?

Spencer: Oh, yes, Jamie. I think of this book as the literary equivalent of the Brexit vote and the election of President Trump. It is a shot against the ongoing efforts by the political and media elites to rewrite history: the myth of a tolerant, pluralistic Islamic Spain is just one example among many. George Orwell said: “He who controls the past controls the future,” and there are concerted efforts today, of which few people are aware, to rewrite history to fit the contemporary’s Left’s globalist, socialist agenda. For example, the false claim that the Vikings had the name “Allah” stitched on their burial clothes recently made international headlines – it was all part of the attempt to get Swedes, and all Europeans, to accept mass Muslim migration without complaint.

Also, this book is intended to be a blow against the foreign policy establishment that has made so many errors based on its improper assessment of global conflicts, and keeps on making those same errors again and again because it never stops to reexamine its premises. The war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and so much more have been predicated on the assumption that Islam is a religion of peace that is perfectly compatible with Western notions of secular, democratic rule, and perfectly comfortable with the idea of non-Muslim governments existing on land once governed by Islamic law.

There are also the bedrock assumptions of the foreign policy establishment that we are all post-modern individuals now, and that there is no conflict that cannot be ironed out by negotiations, and that religious imperatives can always be negotiated away with the proper mix of concessions. These false assumptions and many others are exploded by the reality of history as I delineate in the book. This doesn’t mean that there are no solutions to contemporary global problems, but that the solutions being applied today are all based on false premises. In the book I trace a phenomenon that has been consistent and implacable for fourteen hundred years. Why do we in the U.S. today think that our encounter with it will be different? My fondest hope is that American policymakers will read and study this book, and that it will do nothing less than transform our entire foreign policy approach, moving it to more realistic foundations.

Since its founding in the 1930s, Alcoholics Anonymous has become part of the fabric of American society. AA and the many 12-step groups it inspired have become the country’s go-to solution for addiction in all of its forms. These recovery programs are mandated by drug courts, prescribed by doctors and widely praised by reformed addicts.

Dr. Lance Dodes sees a big problem with that. The psychiatrist has spent more than 20 years studying and treating addiction. His latest book on the subject is The Sober Truth: Debunking the Bad Science Behind 12-Step Programs and the Rehab Industry.

Dodes tells NPR’s Arun Rath that 12-step recovery simply doesn’t work, despite anecdotes about success.

“We hear from the people who do well; we don’t hear from the people who don’t do well,” he says.

On Alcoholics Anonymous’ success rate

There is a large body of evidence now looking at AA success rate, and the success rate of AA is between 5 and 10 percent. Most people don’t seem to know that because it’s not widely publicized. … There are some studies that have claimed to show scientifically that AA is useful. These studies are riddled with scientific errors and they say no more than what we knew to begin with, which is that AA has probably the worst success rate in all of medicine.

It’s not only that AA has a 5 to 10 percent success rate; if it was successful and was neutral the rest of the time, we’d say OK. But it’s harmful to the 90 percent who don’t do well. And it’s harmful for several important reasons. One of them is that everyone believes that AA is the right treatment. AA is never wrong, according to AA. If you fail in AA, it’s you that’s failed.

On why 12-step programs can work

The reason that the 5 to 10 percent do well in AA actually doesn’t have to do with the 12 steps themselves; it has to do with the camaraderie. It’s a supportive organization with people who are on the whole kind to you, and it gives you a structure. Some people can make a lot of use of that. And to its credit, AA describes itself as a brotherhood rather than a treatment.

So as you can imagine, a few people given that kind of setting are able to change their behavior at least temporarily, maybe permanently. But most people can’t deal with their addiction, which is deeply driven, by just being in a brotherhood.

On a psychological approach to addiction

When people are confronted with a feeling of being trapped, of being overwhelmingly helpless, they have to do something. It isn’t necessarily the “something” that actually deals with the problem. … Why addiction, though — why drink? Well, that’s the “something” that they do. In psychology we call it a displacement; you could call it a substitute …

At the request of Kim Kardashian, President Trump commuted the life sentence of Alice Johnson who was convicted 21 years ago of brokering the deals of a multi-million-dollar drug ring that trafficked thousands of pounds of cocaine. The motive behind this presidential pardon likely has little to do with Johnson and much to do with promoting pending legislation supported by George Soros and Black Lives Matter. If passed by Congress, the new law would make it more difficult to imprison criminals and would cause thousands of convicted criminals to be released. -GEG

President Trump announced that he will be commuting the sentence of drug trafficker, Alice Johnson, shortly after he had a meeting with Kim Kardashian.

Alice Johnson, 63, is a grandmother who writes plays. At least, that’s the friendly way she is described in the media. Recently, she was the subject of a video that portrayed her in a sympathetic light as a non-violent drug offender who spent 21 years in prison for a victimless crime. Sounds rather unfair, doesn’t it?

However, she received a life sentence for her role as a leader of a multi-million-dollar cocaine ring that trafficked 4,400 to 6,600 pounds into the US from Colombia. She acted as a broker for drug traffickers in Memphis in the early 1990s but says she never actually sold drugs to users – as though that makes a difference. The judge who sentenced her called her the ‘quintessential entrepreneur’ of the drug ring and said that the impact of 4,400 to 6,600 pounds of cocaine in the community was profound. It will never be known how many human lives were lost because of her leadership role in this activity.
