10 Monsters From Mythology You Do Not Want To Meet

    LISTVERSE

    Excerpt:

    5 – ‘Strigoi (Romanian Mythology)’

Romania is well known for its vampires, especially the infamous Count Dracula, but it also contains a myth of what is possibly the granddaddy of vampire stories—the Strigoi. Name runs a shiver down your spine, doesn’t it?

The Strigoi is a troubled soul from beyond the grave, and he is ready to devour your blood and roam the Earth once more. He can also become invisible and transform into the shape of an animal. A creature of demonic lineage, the Strigoi is so feared in the country that there are still cases of graves being dug up to eliminate the vampiric menace.

  2. @ Bruce:

After seeing the remarkable drawing (or engraving?) in your comment above I’m not sure that I can legitimately describe my Sharpie color pen drawing as artwork!

Btw, I also found the image below which is purportedly an engraving from the year 1679:

Direct person-to-person blood transfusion at the wrist. After engraving from George Abraham Mercklino Tractatio med. Curiosa de murto et occasu transfusionis sanguinis Nuremberg, 1679. Engraving

Your referenced image of a direct person-to-person blood transfusion, purportedly dating back to the year 1679 is indeed VERY INTERESTING. It’s amazing to me, some of the things people were able to conceive and accomplish so many years ago.

My wife and I had the very enlightening opportunity just yesterday to visit an exhibit presenting the ancient drawings and modern-day WORKING MODELS of many of Leonardo Da Vinci’s inventions. (Da Vinci: 1452 – 1519)

For example, the below-reproduced model of Da Vinci’s bicycle looks remarkably similar to a modern-day bicycle, complete with handlebar, seat, wheels, pedals, sprocket-gear, and drive-chain. (The model we saw looked essentially identical to the model shown below and was full size.)

Russian scientist says he is stronger and healthier after injecting himself with ‘eternal life’ bacteria

Anatoli Brouchkov has willingly become a human guinea pig for the 3.5 million-year-old bacteria

    Excerpt:

If injecting yourself with 3.5 million-year-old bacteria could keep you looking and feeling youthful and healthy without having to fork out for a gym membership, would you do it?

Russian scientist Anatoli Brouchkov, head of the Geocryology Department at Moscow State University, is looking for the key to eternal youth.

He has therefore become a human guinea pig for some bacteria that could perhaps hold the key to longevity.

“We have to work out how this bacteria prevents ageing. I think that is the way this science should develop. What is keeping that mechanism alive? And how can we use it for our own benefits?”

The bacteria, named Bacillus F, is amazing because it has remained alive in the permafrost for millions of years.

Scientists have tested it on mice and human blood cells, but this wasn’t enough for Mr. Brouchkov, who decided to inject himself with it.

“I started to work longer, I’ve never had a flu for the last two years,” he said. “After successful experiments on mice and fruit flies, I thought it would be interesting to try the inactivated bacterial culture,” he told The Siberian Times.

He didn’t think there would be a danger, as the bacteria is actually in trace amounts in the water of the region.

The scientist said: “‘Besides, the permafrost is thawing, and I guess these bacteria get into the environment, into the water, so the local population, the Yakut people, in fact, for a long time are getting these cells with water, and even seem to live longer than some other nations. So there was no danger for me.”

It’s not a proper science experiment, but Anatoli Brouchkov says that the bacteria seems to have had a positive effect on him.

He said: “‘It wasn’t quite a scientific experiment, so I cannot professionally describe the effects. But it was quite clear for me that I did not catch flu for two years. Perhaps there were some side-effects, but there should be some special medical equipment to spot them. Of course, such experiments need to be conducted in clinic, with the special equipment and statistics. Then we could say clearly about all the effects.”

Ron Howard, Brian Grazer search for a ‘Breakthrough’ in anti-aging therapies in NatGeo science series

    Los Angeles Times
    Scott Collins
    10/30/2015

    Excerpt:

For his latest film, Ron Howard reached far into the past — all the way back to Opie Taylor.

Howard, the 61-year-old director who won an Oscar for “A Beautiful Mind,” is, along with his longtime producing partner, Brian Grazer, the guiding force behind “Breakthrough,” a new six-part science series that premieres Sunday on National Geographic Channel.

Howard directed “The Age of Aging,” the film on medical research into anti-aging therapies. To illustrate the effect that aging has over a lifetime, he includes a slide show of himself growing older over the years. There’s a shot of Howard in character as small-town Opie, whom he played as a child star on “The Andy Griffith Show” in the early 1960s. There he is playing the clean-cut teenager Richie Cunningham on “Happy Days.” And there are recent photos, where the middle-aged director has laugh lines and thinning hair. Think of it as a baby boomer highlight reel.

“We’re all aging,” Howard said with Grazer in his Beverly Hills office, explaining what attracted him to the topic. In fictional terms, he explored the subject in “Cocoon,” his 1985 hit comic fantasy about seniors who magically throw off the pains and limits of advanced years after an encounter with aliens.

Howard narrates the NatGeo film, so the reference to his real self also prevents people from thinking “it’s another episode of ‘Arrested Development,'” he joked, alluding to the Fox sitcom that he narrated and helped produce.
Ron Howard, Brain Grazer on their new series ‘Breakthrough’

Filmmakers Ron Howard andf Brian Grazer discuss their approach to telling the stories of innovators in their new series “Breakthrough.”

More seriously, Howard believes that his new TV film can illuminate the scientific advances, particularly in genetic research, that some doctors think will slow down aging and greatly extend human lifespan in coming years. But the tale is not without the kind of drama that can lure a director of scripted narratives.

“Aging is very controversial, and the medical community and the research community don’t even quite know what to do with it,” Howard said.

The topic was so vast that he and his team decided to focus on scientists engaged in cutting-edge research, such as Laura Deming, a science prodigy who enrolled at MIT at age 14 and now studies aging. Interspersed are vignettes of real-life patients struggling with the natural declines of age.

“We began to say, ‘Let’s acknowledge the more extreme possibilities, but let’s take a very serious look at the most responsible scientists that we can find, who actually believe they can make a difference, and let’s follow them,’ and in following them we actually uncovered some actual suspense, conflict and drama,” Howard said.

‘Super-agers’ study may reveal secrets to staying young

    Yahoo News

    11/3/2015

    Excerpt:

Miami (AFP) – Mary Helen Abbott, 77, paints her lips bright pink, still smokes the occasional cigarette, keeps up on all the gossip at the retirement home and wears a short skirt to fitness class.

She giggles as the aerobics instructor shouts — “Swagger! Like you are going to meet someone famous!” — then she and a dozen seniors throw shoulders back, lift their knees high and strut around the exercise studio.

Abbott is what scientists refer to as a “super-ager,” and she is taking part in a $3.2 million study that aims to uncover the secrets to staying sharp and healthy into old age.

The Animal that Lives for 10,000 Years

One creature can survive for millennia in the so-called ‘Sea of Death’

    BBC – Earth
    Zaria Gorvett
    12/17/2015

They fell out of the sky and landed on the pale blue planet with a splash. Many of the crew missed the whole thing. Deep inside the spacecraft, arranged in neat stacks, were rows and rows of sleeping astronauts. Each was curled up inside their own pod, where they could have stayed for 10,000 years.

These were no ordinary space travellers. In the following weeks, they burst from their shells and developed into full-blown aquatic monsters: they are salmon-pink, with three eyes and eleven pairs of thrashing legs.
