EXCERPTS from an article concerning the movie: America: Imagine the world without her

“UPDATED: … Dinesh D’Souza’s “America” soared more than 60 percent on July Fourth itself.”

Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza’s new documentary America, which expanded nationwide Wednesday, grossed $4 million for the five days from 1,105 theaters. That’s a modest footprint, compared to the $3,000-plus location count for the other new films.

America, placing No. 11 for the weekend, didn’t match the $6.5 million nationwide launch of D’Souza’s hit documentary 2016: Obama’s America two years ago, but soared more than 60 percent on July Fourth after an intensive marketing push tied to the holiday. On Saturday, America was the only film in the top 20 that was down, however.

Lionsgate is distributing America, which debunks the narrative that the United States has been a force of evil across the world through a combination of historical re-creations and interviews with some of the country’s harshest critics, including former Weather Underground radical Bill Ayers.

  5. Bruce says:

I haven’t seen ‘America, Imagine the world without her’ yet, but I am looking forward to viewing it soon.

I think D’Souza is a reasonably good writer and director, and I’m glad he has made this memorable film, as well as his very successful, earlier film, ‘2016, Obama’s America’, which I did see and greatly enjoy.

However, I have some some definite concerns concerning D’Souza’s message regarding Obama’s birthplace.

D’Souza stated in the movie ‘2016’ and also in several interviews following, as I recall, he thinks that Obama was born in Hawaii, as claimed.

The evidence that Obama was actually born in KENYA, and NOT in Hawaii, is OVERWHELMING.

    See, for example:

Obama WAS Born in KENYA, Compilation of Support Data

D’Souza is obviously a pretty smart guy. I believe, he either has not thoroughly researched the FACTS regarding Obama’s true birthplace in Kenya, which is inexcusable for an influential movie director covering the topic, he is a coward, or he has been threatened/intimidated to regurgitate the ‘Obama was born in Hawaii’ lie.

Costco denies political motive for pulling D’Souza’s book

CFO cites poor sales for No. 4 Amazon bestseller

    WND
    Jerome R. Corsi
    7/8/2014

    Excerpt:

NEW YORK – Big-box retailer Costco pulled Dinesh D’Souza’s new book, “America: Imagine a World Without Her,” just after the nationwide release of the companion movie, but Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti told WND the decision was not motivated by political considerations.

The book, heavily critical of Barack Obama, was officially released June 2. A corporate decision to return the books was issued July 1, just as it is about to debut on the New York Times bestseller list.

Galanti confirmed to WND the “pull order” was in effect and that D’Souza’s book is in the process of being removed from Costco stores this week, with the goal to have all copies of D’Souza’s book out of Costco stores nationwide and shipped back to the vendor no later than July 15.

He said the decision to pull D’Souza’s book was not political but was based solely on sales, arguing Costco’s national goal is to market books that show up on the New York Times bestseller list.

The book will make the New York Times list July 13.

Galanti could not explain why Costco book buyer Pennie Clark Ianniciello decided to pull the book just as D’Souza’s movie was being released and the national marketing campaign on the book and movie switched into high gear.

The movie “America,” which has been given a rare “A+” CinemaScore by audiences, opened in 1,105 theaters nationwide to roughly $4 million over the five-day July 4 holiday weekend.

WND first reported Monday that the retail giant had issued the unusual pull order for a new book that is rising on the bestsellers lists. It is currently ranked No. 5 at Amazon.

The book, in this midterm election year, is a strong rebuttal of the progressive ideology behind President Obama’s policies, which have been supported by Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal, a major Democrat donor and a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention that nominated the president. A Washington Post political reporter has noted Obama’s “romance” with the nation’s second-largest retailer.

Costco has sold more than 3,600 copies of “America” nationwide, with about 700 copies sold last week as D’Souza’s film by the same name opened at more than 1,000 movie theaters nationwide.

But Costco’s book department issued the “pull order,” requiring all Costco stores nationwide to remove the book, confirmed Scott Losse, an inventory control specialist in the book department at the Costco Wholesale corporate office in Issaquah, Washington, a suburb of Seattle.

Contacted for a reaction, D’Souza was surprised to learn of the Costco decision.

“If true, this would be very odd,” D’Souza said. “We’re in the process of finding out what’s happening. I look forward to getting to the bottom of this and continuing the strong relationship my publisher and I have always had with Costco and their millions of shoppers.”

Most Costco stores WND contacted Monday had already pulled “America” from the shelves, with others scheduled to remove it with their regularly scheduled inventory changes Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

A few Costco stores told inquirers Monday they were “in luck,” because a handful of books were still available and a few copies remained in the warehouse waiting to be returned. Staffers offered to put aside a book so it could be purchased before all copies were shipped back to the vendor.

WND contacted by telephone and email Costco’s national book-buyer, Pennie Clark Ianniciello, at Costco’s headquarters, but received no response to WND’s questions regarding why D’Souza’s book was being pulled from the shelves just as the companion movie was opening in theaters.

The Washington Examiner reported June 20 that the book sold 4,915 in the first week and 5,592 in the second week but mysteriously was kept off the New York Times bestseller list, where it would have ranked No. 8 and then No. 11 on the June 29 list.

D’Souza told the Examiner: “It’s their newspaper, and they have a right to rig their list anyway they want, but if they are doing it, people should know.”

He said the New York Times list is important to boosting sales.

“It matters to be on it,” he said.

    Costco surrenders to ‘America’ consumers

CFO notes sales spike, outrage in response to original move

    WND
    Jerome R. Corsi
    7/8/2014

    Excerpt:

NEW YORK – Amid a flood of opposition from members, Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti informed WND that the wholesale giant has reversed its decision to remove Dinesh D’Souza’s book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” from its stores.

Galanti told WND that Costco’s corporate headquarters in Issaquah, Washington, instructed local stores that had not yet returned the D’Souza book to the vendor to keep the remaining copies on the shelf.

The book will be reordered from publisher Regnery, he said.

“Frankly, because of all the hoo-rah, some Costco locations have sold more of D’Souza’s book today than they sold in the previous four weeks combined,” he said.

Galanti was referring to the outcry in response to WND’s reporting Monday that Costco had decided July 1 to remove the book “America” just as the companion movie of the same name was hitting theaters.

The book was No. 43 on Amazon.com’s bestseller list when WND’s first story broke and now sits at the No. 1 spot overall.

“We are bringing it back, not for political reasons, but because the book is now selling well,” Galanti told WND. “We didn’t pull the book on July 1 for political reasons, and we are not putting it back in the stores now for political reasons. We are doing this because we sell merchandise and D’Souza’s book is now selling well.”

D’Souza told WND in an interview, however, that in light of the success of his previous books sold by Costco, the release of the companion movie last week and the book’s strong Amazon.com sales, among other factors, its hard to imagine the reason for pulling the book being anything other than “ideological solidarity with Obama.”

Dinesh D’Souza: Costco Pulling My Book Shows ‘the Left Is Terrified’

    Mediaite
    Josh Feldman
    7/8/2014

    Excerpt:

Dinesh D’Souza, filmmaker and author of America, joined Sean Hannity tonight to react to Costco pulling his book (for reasons they say had to do with sales, not politics). D’Souza said that of course the decision (which has now been reversed) was political, and shows that “the left is terrified” at how well his work is being received by the American mainstream.

D’Souza said that liberals are doing whatever they can to sabotage him because his movie is popular, and so is the book. Because while critics haven’t been kind to America, it reportedly has an A+ rating on CinemaScore.

D’Souza charged that “the left in this country has so much intolerance” and their mentality in going after him is “let’s try to ruin this guy’s livelihood.” He said someone clearly complained to Costco and the decision to pull the book was clearly “a consummation of a kind of leftist strategy.”

D’Souza’s ‘America’ uncovers a generation of liberal lies

    RenewAmerica
    Michael Bresciani
    7/7/2014

    Excerpt:

One of the contributors of the American Prophet website submitted a critique of D’Souza’s film just days before its release. Along with other reports it was the impetus for my trip to the local theatre to see for myself what the buzz was all about.

I am now convinced that much more than a mere buzz; D’Souza’s offering is a trumpet, which every American should see regardless of their race, political persuasion or national origin.

D’Souza has an advantage over almost any filmmaker in America today and he could not be a more perfect choice to make this film because he is an Indian born immigrant whose love for this country was not biased by an education in U.S. schools where the curriculum has been carefully and unremittingly skewed to the left for an entire generation.

The film deals with generational lies that have slowly crept into the national dialogue, educational system and the political rhetoric of the left. The shear persistence of these lies and the willingness to lay these prevarications before an unsuspecting generation of our youth as ‘true history’ has fostered a kind of ‘new truth’ that after all is nothing but syncopated, syndicated, deliberate and dangerous lies meant to lead America into a day of self-loathing and inordinate guilt.

    But is the film fair?

In fact, the opening elements of the film are all about the history and the narrative of the modern view of our past. So much time was given to these views that I began to wonder if D’Souza was leaning liberal. Yet, he gave each element full time and explained each view without bias or coloration. Some of the subjects outlaid are:

—- The question of whether America actually had Christian foundations

—- The Horrors of the Slave trade in America

—- The mishandling of Native Americans

—- The great land grab from Mexico

—- Theft of other nation’s wealth and colonialism

—- The ‘unjust’ waging of war in Vietnam

—- The creeping effect of socialism and its origins

When these subjects have been fairly presented D’Souza offers what renowned commentator Paul Harvey coined as – “the rest of the story.”

Using an an array of facts, historical honesty and bare knuckles attacks on liberally biased accounting of events, Dinesh goes round after round to win the match between a generationally long swindle of the American narrative and the simple truth that America has much more to be proud of than she has to be ashamed of; in fact, it is the false narrative of history, now taught to every school kid that is – the real shame.

As an example, the view that all Native Americans were abused, displaced and subject to genocide is countered with the truth about the warring and constant displacement of tribes done by the Native Americans themselves.

The picture painted by today’s historians, of a perfectly balanced nation of natives, all happily just living off the land, and never taking more than they needed, and living in perfect harmony with nature and each other, is seen as a naïve. Tribes were always warring and cruelty, slavery and genocide was commonly practiced by many tribes – long before Europeans arrived.

In the mid-eighties, I was able to spend some time in the beautiful state of Oregon where I found a Kalapuya Indian mound about fifty miles south of the Columbia River. The mound is a raised area where the natives camped.

Musing through thousands of broken arrow heads and other artifacts I came across a large “L” shaped rock that was covered with some sort of inscription. It could be held in hand and looked like it may have been a tool of some kind. After inquiring at the home of a local collector and historian of the tribe I discovered that the ominous looking rock was a “slave killer.” It was used to kill any slave won through raids and conquests and who dared to attempt an escape.

Slavery was practiced by many tribes in this country not just the Kalapuya.

This knowledge is not used here or in any other historical context to besmirch the history of Native Americans, but is only a call to a more honest view of history. This is exactly the kind of thing D’Souza repeatedly accomplished in his film.

All that Lucas D. Smith has to do to make people start believing that he got Obama’s “Kenyan birth certificate” in Kenya and did not forge it is to show people that he, Lucas D. Smith, had actually gone to Kenya. All that that would take would be to scan the page of his passport with a Kenya stamp on it. But Lucas D. Smith refuses to do that. (I wonder why??)

Yet he hopes that people will believe him despite that omission, and despite (1) the government of Kenya having stated that it investigated whether or not Obama was born there, and that Obama was NOT born there; (2) the birth certificate of Hawaii and the confirmation of it by the officials of BOTH parties in Hawaii and the Index Data and the birth notices all showing that Obama was born in HAWAII, not Kenya.

    America isn’t a one-weekend wonder.

The new docudrama, from the team behind 2016: Obama’s America, earned an A+ rating from CinemaScore during its debut weekend July 4-6.

Today, Box Office Mojo said the film enjoyed a “fantastic” second weekend.

Dinesh D’Souza’s America (2014) had a fantastic hold this weekend. The documentary eased 11 percent to $2.45 million; to date, its earned $8.3 million.

The film scored the fifth highest per-screen average of any movie over the weekend, and it unseated Michael Moore’s Roger & Me on the list of top grossing political documentaries in just two weekends. America currently holds the seventh slot in that category.

Dinesh D’Souza’s book of the same name also is enjoying a blast of synergy. It’s currently the top-selling book at online powerhouse Amazon.com.
