Within Google, knowledge about Dragonfly has been restricted to just a few hundred members of the internet giant’s 88,000-strong workforce, said a source with knowledge of the project. The source spoke to The Intercept on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to contact the media. The source said that they had moral and ethical concerns about Google’s role in the censorship, which is being planned by a handful of top executives and managers at the company with no public scrutiny.

“I’m against large companies and governments collaborating in the oppression of their people, and feel like transparency around what’s being done is in the public interest,” the source said, adding that they feared “what is done in China will become a template for many other nations.”

Google is planning to launch a censored version of its search engine in China that will blacklist websites and search terms about human rights, democracy, religion, and peaceful protest, The Intercept can reveal.

The project – code-named Dragonfly – has been underway since spring of last year, and accelerated following a December 2017 meeting between Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai and a top Chinese government official, according to internal Google documents and people familiar with the plans…

Google’s search service cannot currently be accessed by most internet users in China because it is blocked by the country’s so-called Great Firewall. The app Google is building for China will comply with the country’s strict censorship laws, restricting access to content that Xi Jinping’s Communist Party regime deems unfavorable…

“We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country, and that’s what they’re doing.” That was candidate Donald Trump back in April of  2016. As he also said, in reference to China, “we’re like the piggy bank that’s being robbed.” If that seems a stretch, consider the case of Ruopeng Liu.

The Chinese student enrolled at Duke University in 2006 and in 2007 he became a protégé of Dr. David Smith, developer of “metamaterials.” These function as an “invisibility cloak” that can make objects invisible to microwave signals.

Liu brought in two researchers from China, and during their stay at Duke they took photographs of the lab and its contents, as NBC noted “focusing on the apparatus that allows scientists to measure the cloak.” They took everything back to China, where they built an exact replica in Liu’s previous lab.

Smith said it sounded like theft and the FBI agreed, though no charges were filed. Some observers wondered if the Chinese government had tasked Liu to grab Smith’s intellectual property but in an interview Liu laughed and called the charge “ridiculous.”  Liu is now worth a reported $2.7 billion and touted as the Elon Musk of China.

We don’t pretend to have great theological expertise, but Maxine Waters’ recent declaration that she’s on a “mission from God” seems to put her squarely in the same category of previous divine tools as plagues of locusts, frogs, flies, lice, and eruptions of large, painful boils which would even make Dr. Pimple Popper lose her lunch.

If we take Maxine at her word about God’s purpose for her, it suggests that her entire life until now has been utterly pointless, an idea with which we can’t really take issue. Seriously, what has this bitter woman actually accomplished over her long, angry life other than giving blobfish a reason to feel slightly better about their looks?

Don’t look now, but there are numerous signs that President Trump is winning the trade war with China. While the battle over tariffs and protecting intellectual property may eventually damage the United States’ economy, there are signs that China is already paying a price for its refusal to bend to Trump’s demands.

One indicator of that price is the sharp plunge in China’s stock exchanges. Since the White House announced the first tariffs — on washing machines and solar cells on Jan. 22 — the Shanghai Index of Chinese stocks is down nearly 20 percent, while the S&P 500 is off less than 1 percent.

That decline of share values is occurring in spite of the first-time inclusion in the MSCI, an important international index, of many Chinese stocks on June 1. That initial index listing attracted billions of dollars toward Chinese stocks, in expectation it would boost prices, but it did not.
