Facebook’s Libra is the last thing the world needs – big tech’s use of our data threatens to intrude even on financial transactions

……………… Consider last week’s news about Facebook, and the fact that three years of corporate disgrace – and rising noise from legislators about bringing the tech giant to heel – have yet to slow its terrifying quest to insinuate its workings into every area of our lives. Now, in a move that could have been taken from a futuristic novel, it wants to create nothing less than a new global currency.

“Libra” will be pegged to a basket of mainstream currencies at a value of about a dollar, and rooted in the model of secure, immutable online transactions we know as blockchain. Its operations will be overseen by a new organisation based in Geneva, open to any company or corporation that has a value of at least $1bn (£790m) and will invest a minimum of $10m. There are currently 28 such participants, ranging from Uber and Spotify to Mastercard – and by way of assuring sceptics of its supposedly hands-off intentions, Facebook insists its own voting power will be restricted to 1%. But Libra is a project conceived and developed by Mark Zuckerberg’s company. And the currency will only perform the necessary feat of scaling up if it becomes a central part of the lives of the billions of us who use Facebook’s platforms, via a linked app called Calibra that will initially be woven into Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

New York City) — Project Veritas has released a new report on Google which includes undercover video of a Senior Google Executive, leaked documents, and testimony from a Google insider.  The report appears to show Google’s plans to affect the outcome of the 2020 elections and “prevent” the next “Trump situation.”

The report includes undercover footage of longtime Google employee and Head of Responsible Innovation, Jen Gennai saying:

“Elizabeth Warren is saying we should break up Google. And like, I love her but she’s very misguided, like that will not make it better it will make it worse, because all these smaller companies who don’t have the same resources that we do will be charged with preventing the next Trump situation, it’s like a small company cannot do that.”

Said Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe:

“This is the third tech insider who has bravely stepped forward to expose the secrets of Silicon Valley.  These new documents, supported by undercover video, raise questions of Google’s neutrality and the role they see themselves fulfilling in the 2020 elections.”

Jen Gennai is the head of “Responsible Innovation” for Google, a sector that monitors and evaluates the responsible implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.  In the video, Gennai says Google has been working diligently to “prevent” the results of the 2016 election from repeating in 2020:

Because the first law of progressive politics today is “Thou shalt say nothing positive about Donald Trump,” few if any on the Left are hailing his holding off on attacking Iran in retaliation for shooting down an armed drone as statesmanlike restraint.  Citing an anonymous “senior administration official,” The New York Times reported last night:

President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.

The shared goal of the mullahs and the Democrats was to create a no-win situation for the president: if he attacks Iran, he risks being drawn into a shooting war, a move that is not likely to be popular and could easily cost him his re-election.  It could also very likely drive a wedge between the United States and its allies that are cooperating in the sanctions against Iran that are seriously hurting it.  That is the mullahs’ goal, and they are more than happy to risk loss of life and facilities in order to achieve it.

Mark Zuckerberg’s latest venture won’t compete with Satoshi Nakamoto’s project for undermining central banking, tyranny, and the financial surveillance state.

Bitcoin has the capacity to undermine government control of money because you can freely exchange it with anyone in the world, meaning that no government or government-regulated entity has the capacity to interfere with its use. Because its supply is fixed at 21 million units, it also can’t be watered down by inflation.

Facebook’s new “Libra” coin, which was announced today, is both an interesting project to improve global payments and a useful reminder that Silicon Valley can’t ever compete with bitcoin’s mission of reclaiming control of money from the state.

The social networking giant is launching Libra in partnership with MasterCard, PayPal, eBay, Uber, Lyft, and several other tech heavyweights. Facebook claims that it has the potential to become the first “internet of money” with the capacity to modernize the way value moves around the world and to help provide financial services to the 1.7 billion adults without banking services. In the tradition of bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, the company released a “white paper” this morning that lays out the basic details. Given its dismal record with customer privacy, Facebook has wisely created a new nonprofit entity based in Switzerland to oversee the project.

U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) revealed in recent comments the extent to which the Chinese regime pressures Chinese nationals studying and working in the United States to steal intellectual property on its behalf.

During a speech on homeland security and counterterrorism given at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington D.C. on June 17, Warner revealed that Chinese spies have threatened the families of Chinese international students at U.S. schools to bring back intellectual property.

Otherwise, “if your son or daughter does not come back with intellectual property, you, family, will be put in jeopardy,” he said.

Warner is vice chairman of U.S. Senate select committee on intelligence.
