Agrivoltaics and dual-use solar in Obama’s Kenya

Farmers in Kenya Benefit from Solar Panel Technology that Increases Yields

Video description: Kenyan scientists are experimenting with a technology that uses solar panels to shade crops while also producing renewable energy. Agrivoltaics is the term. This method has been found to reduce water loss and increase yields in successful trials.

A while back I read about this method of installing solar panels about 10 feet above the ground and spacing them so that sunlight reaches the ground and crops can be grown and livestock / animals can graze.

The Guardian published a story about it in 2022: Kenya to use solar panels to boost crops by ‘harvesting the sun twice’ Successful trials found growing crops beneath panels – known as agrivoltaics – reduced water loss and resulted in larger plants.

I like the idea of raising the solar panels high up off the ground to make use of the land below it and get a good amount of sunlight through it too.

According to the current Wikipedia entry Agrivoltaics (also called agrophotovoltaics, agrisolar, or dual-use solar) refers to the practice of using the same land for both solar energy and agriculture.
