Video report: New information regarding Barack Obama Sr. and the Kenyan doctor, James O. W. Ang’awa, who in 1961 delivered his son Barack Obama II in Mombasa, Kenya.

The foregoing video book review was sponsored by friend & compatriot Bruce Steadman.

Extensive notes were taken while reading Dr. John Carman’s book and while some of the information was covered in the above embedded video book review much of the information was not.

Below please find embedded for your review 24 pages of notes which you may consult if you are interested in learning more about colonial Kenya (1920s thru 1960), the birth place of both Barack Obama Sr. and Barack Obama II.

It appears that there are no digital versions of the book and while Google Books does list the book by title there are no previews and you cannot look inside of it.

  1. Bruce says:

    VERY INTERESTING

I found the following passages, excerpted from your notes, to be of particular interest:

2 – 3. LEARNED ARMCHAIR PUNDITS RIDICULED – “[Dr.] Krapf [a German missionary of the London Missionary Society] in his turn saw the white peak on 10 November 1849 and wrote in his dairy, ‘This morning we had a beautiful view of the snow-mountain Kilimanjaro . . . I could discern that its white crown must be snow.’ When this sensational discovery was later communicated to the Royal Geographical Society in London, the learned armchair pundits ridiculed the idea that snow could exist on or near the equator, however high the mountain.”

4 – 5. “Meanwhile Captain, later Lord Lugard had been sent to Uganda where a treaty was signed with the Kabaka Mwanga made the country also a British Protectorate. Lugard succeeded in persuading the British that the best way of suppressing the slave-trade was to open up the country by building a railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria.

(cont.) “A survey was carried out and construction began in 1896, largely with the help of coolie labour imported from India.

(cont.) “In 1899 the line reached the point where Nairobi now stands and there ensued a period during which progress was held up while plans for the construction of the next section of track were discussed. It is interesting to reflect that if this delay had occurred only a little later on when the railway had advanced another fifteen or twenty miles, the capital of the Colony would have been sited in the much more salubrious surroundings of Kikuyu or Limuru.

    5. “The seat of Government was shifted from Mombasa to Nairobi in 1907.”

    13. “There was no maternity ward at the hospital and there was a set scale of fees for baby cases one or two of which came my way, but the only other supplementary cash I earned was for the odd anaesthetic and for examining rickshaw boys who had to have a certificate of medical fitness for which one coukd charge a shilling.”

    31. “There were several substantial urban communities besides that of Nairobi and of these the largest and most important was Mombasa where the shipping companies had their offices. Here [i.e., Mombasa] there was a large African hospital as well as a European one which occupied a singularly beautiful site overlooking the Indian Ocean.”

    31. “In the African Reserves the aim was to establish a hospital in each administrative centre and to staff it with at least two MOs [i.e., Medical Officers] so that one could be on safari paying regular visits to outlying dispensaries whit the other ran the hospital.”

“In the absence of a hospital my time was spent largely on safari, making regular visits to a chain of dispensaries twelve in number, each sited in one of the locations which made up the District. Since there was no registration of births and deaths no accurate estimate of the population was possible, but it was probably somewhere between 300,000 and a quarter of a million.

“My work at the various dispensaries did not differ materially from that of any district MO [i.e., Medical Officer], so an account of it will serve to give a picture of the conditions which prevailed in the early 1930s. There were however two dispensaries which I visited every week, that in South Gem and that in Alego. This was to make sure that there was continuity in the treatment of cases of yaws and syphilis.”

    64. “Before lunch Braimbridge [i.e., Dr. Clifford Viney Braimbridge] did all the major cases, but in the afternoon we often changed places and while he gave the anaesthetics, which incidentally he did very well, I did the minor ones like ganglions or the wrist, ulcers and some fractures. One the other days, Braimbridge would usually have operation to do over at the European Hospital and I had to cope with any emergencies which might be admitted, though I never aspired to be a surgeon. Sitting at the head of the table giving anaesthetics at the rate of over a hundred a week and watching an expert at work on a wide variety of cases meant that I learned a great deal about operative techniques so that I could do a reasonable job when immediate operation was needed to save a life.”

    65. “I hope you don’t think I’m [i.e., Dr. John Ambrose Carman] going to tackle that Abdulla [i.e, the assistant].” I said. ‘Mr Braimbridge says that every compound fracture of the skull must be operated on at once.’ Abdulla replied as he held out a clean pair of gloves. ‘You have seen it done many times and I am here to help you.’

    69. “Although I was giving all the anaesthetics at the Native Hospital and had charge of two medical wards there, I was also MO [i.e., Medical Officer] to the Prison Hospital and the Infectious Diseases Hospital which latter was situated on the extreme edge of the municipal area on a site which has long since been engulfed by industrial development.”

    74. “There was a period of time when staff was so short that at one and the same time I had to take over the the (sic) Mathari Mental Hospital when the MO [i.e., Medical Officer] i/c [i.e., in charge of] Dr. H. L. Gordon unexpectedly retired on account of ill-health.

    76. “There were large well-equipped hospitals at Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Fort Hall and Machakos, but the show place was Kiamba, eight miles from Nairobi and it was to this hospital that visiting Big-wigs, carefully kept away from the Native Hospital in Nairobi, were taken to be shown what the Department was doing for the African.”

    89. “There being no medical school in Kenya at this time there was no hospital having a medical staff of the kind which exists in England, but in 1957 HH The Aga Khan founded and financed a new multi-racial hospital which was named after his grandfather, HH The Aga Khan Memorial Hospital.”

  2. Bruce says:

I think Dr. Carman’s descriptions regarding the status of the medical profession in Kenya in the time period 1926 – 1960, during which he worked there, give us an excellent prelude to the medical environment inhabited by Dr. James O. W. Ang’awa, who delivered Barack Obama II at the Coast Province General Hospital in Mombasa in 1961.

Kenyan doctors could specialize in certain areas, BUT THEY ACTUALLY DID EVERYTHING MEDICAL, when called upon to do so, most certainly including DELIVERING BABIES.

They worked at a number of different hospitals, clinics, etc in Kenya DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD and sometimes were RESPONSIBLE for medical facilities which they seldom even visited.

  3. Bruce says:

Returning briefly to one particular note that was cited above in my first comment:

2 – 3. LEARNED ARMCHAIR PUNDITS RIDICULED“[Dr.] Krapf [a German missionary of the London Missionary Society] in his turn saw the white peak on 10 November 1849 and wrote in his dairy, ‘This morning we had a beautiful view of the snow-mountain Kilimanjaro . . . I could discern that its white crown must be snow.’ When this sensational discovery was later communicated to the Royal Geographical Society in London, the learned armchair pundits ridiculed the idea that snow could exist on or near the equator, however high the mountain.”

LOL – It’s obvious that ‘ARMCHAIR PUNDITS’ and their ‘oh-so-clever’ IGNORANT RIDICULE of folks actually out in the field observing and recording FACTS hasn’t really changed that much since 1849!

Lucas – Keep up the GREAT WORK!

OBAMA WAS BORN IN KENYA, AND YOU HAVE CONVINCINGLY PROVEN IT!
