{"id":6420,"date":"2015-02-25T23:12:21","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T03:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/?p=6420"},"modified":"2015-02-26T13:47:44","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T17:47:44","slug":"black-history-month-at-wobik-robert-taylor-robinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/black-history-month-at-wobik-robert-taylor-robinson\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month at WOBIK: Robert Robinson Taylor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To celebrate Black History Month here at WOBIK we are displaying the new Robert Robinson Taylor USPS postage stamp (first day of issue was Feb. 12, 2015):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Robert-Robinson-Taylor-stamp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6421\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Robert-Robinson-Taylor-stamp.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Robinson Taylor stamp\" width=\"385\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Robert-Robinson-Taylor-stamp.jpg 385w, https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Robert-Robinson-Taylor-stamp-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Apparently Black History Month was originally known as <strong>Negro History Week <\/strong>when it was created in 1926.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It wasn&#8217;t until 1976 that the\u00a0observance was changed from one week to one full month and the word Negro was replaced with the word Black.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">February is the shortest month of the year and I&#8217;ve sometimes heard tales about\u00a0Black History Month being celebrated in February for that same reason. Not true, not at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As stated above the\u00a0observance was originally a week long event which was held in the second (2nd) week of February.\u00a0 This was to coincide with the\u00a0birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (12th day) and Frederick Douglass (14th day).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The postage stamp above bears a photograph of Robert Robinson Taylor (June 8, 1868 \u2013 December 13, 1942) who, according to what I could find on Wikipedia, was:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1<\/strong>. \u00a0American architect<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2<\/strong>. \u00a0According to some accounts the first accredited black American\u00a0architect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>3<\/strong>. \u00a0First black American student enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1888).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>4<\/strong>. \u00a0Designed many of the buildings on the campus of Tuskegee University (prior to 1932), and he served as second-in-command to the school&#8217;s\u00a0founder and first President, Booker T. Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The United States Postal Services adds the following regarding\u00a0Robert Robinson Taylor:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remembered for his calm determination and quiet dignity, Robert Robinson Taylor (1868-1942) is believed to have been both the first black graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the country&#8217;s first academically trained black architect\u2013accomplishments that helped open a new profession to African Americans.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His work furthered Booker T. Washington&#8217;s dream of fostering not just African-American builders and carpenters, but architects who could plan the buildings.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Purchase the postage stamp online (USPS website) at the following link:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usps.com\/stamps\/robert-taylor.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Robert Robinson Taylor stamp<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It should also be noted that Black History Month is also celebrated in the following two countries:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a. \u00a0<strong>United Kingdom of Great Britain<\/strong> (since 1987)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">b. \u00a0<strong>Canada<\/strong> (since 1995 by the Canadian House of Commons and since 2008 by the Canadian Senate)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speaking of postage stamps we want to bring up that we&#8217;ve seen a number of Barack Obama postage stamps from other countries and maybe even a US Commonwealth (or US Territory) stamp. I can&#8217;t remember for certain about the US Commonwealth\/Territory stamp (I may not be remembering correctly) but we will look around and see if we can locate any images and then post them (if there are any) in the comments section.
