{"id":5528,"date":"2014-09-25T21:44:19","date_gmt":"2014-09-26T01:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/?p=5528"},"modified":"2014-09-25T23:54:13","modified_gmt":"2014-09-26T03:54:13","slug":"university-of-iowa-shooting-november-1st-1991","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/university-of-iowa-shooting-november-1st-1991\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Iowa shooting &#8211; November 1st, 1991"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/video\/wab\/vi4113367833\/imdb\/embed?autoplay=false&amp;width=640\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">School shootings\/massacres\u00a0are nothing new and they predate the signing of the US Constitution. It should also be noted that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">guns weren&#8217;t always used in school massacres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A couple of months ago I watched a video (embedded several paragraphs below) of a speech (June, 2014) given by Barack Obama regarding school\u00a0massacres. Listening to the speech made me think of a conversation that I once had with the mother of school shooting victim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before we discuss that conversation please allow to me provide some background on\u00a0school massacres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One example from colonial America occurred in the Province of Pennsylvania (or Pennsylvania Colony) on\u00a0July 26th <strong>1764<\/strong>. \u00a0Guns weren&#8217;t used and the perpetrators weren&#8217;t European\u00a0descendants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four (4) Lenape\u00a0indigenous Americans<b>\u00a0<\/b>(also known as Delaware Indians)\u00a0entered a schoolhouse in what is now\u00a0Franklin County, near present\u00a0Greencastle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The schoolmaster, Enoch Brown, and a number of young\u00a0students were tomahawked to death\u00a0and<b>\u00a0<\/b>scalped. \u00a0Some students were taken as prisoners.<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-Middleton171_2-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enoch_Brown_school_massacre#cite_note-Middleton171-2\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">Example 2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On August 16th <strong>1856<\/strong> in<b>\u00a0<\/b>Florence, Alabama a\u00a0schoolmaster strangled a young student to death because the boy had accidentally stepped on, and killed, the schoolmaster&#8217;s bird (a tame\u00a0sparrow). \u00a0When the boy&#8217;s father discovered what had happened he grabbed his gun and went and to the school and shot the schoolmaster dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">Example 3<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On November 2nd<\/span><b> 1853 <\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in<b>\u00a0<\/b>Louisville, Kentucky a\u00a0schoolmaster (Mr. Butler) was shot dead by\u00a0a student named Matthew Ward. The day before the shooting Mathew&#8217;s brother, also a student, was punished by the schoolmaster. Mathew believed that the punishment was excessive. Mathew brought a pistol to school the next morning and shot Mr. Butler (the schoolmaster) dead. \u00a0Mathew was acquitted of the crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are many other examples and many of them have occurred outside of the United States. Before anyone had ever heard of the town (population approximately 25,000) of\u00a0Columbine, Colorado (and the 1999<\/span>\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Columbine High School massacre<\/span><\/em>) <span style=\"color: #000000;\">there was, for example, the<\/span>\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dunblane school massacre<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">which occurred\u00a0March 13th <strong>1996<\/strong> in Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thomas Hamilton shot dead sixteen (16) children and one (1) teacher at Dunblane Primary School. \u00a0Ten (10) others were wounded during the attack. \u00a0Hamilton then killed himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Obama outright lied when he said that,<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We are the only developed country on Earth where this<\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">[i.e., school massacres]<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">happens<\/span><\/em>. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">He said that during his speech (referenced in the foregoing) in regards to the June 10th<\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2014<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">shooting at\u00a0Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon where a 15 year old\u00a0Michael Padgett (he was Mormon) shot dead a\u00a014 year old student named Emilio Hoffman. \u00a0A\u00a0teacher was also wounded during the attack and a security, or law enforcement, officer exchanged gun fire with Padgett. Padgette then shot himself and died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7LdeCQcUFMk?rel=0\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I once worked as a technical support agent for one of the world&#8217;s largest manufactures of computer hard drives, Western Digital. \u00a0During many of the calls I was able to identify the issue as a problem with drive format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I would talk the customer through steps on how to format their hard drive for use with PC or with Mac. \u00a0Sometimes for use on both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you want to use your drive (any drive, by any manufacturer) on both you&#8217;d go to Disk Utility (if doing so on a Mac) and then choose one partition, then\u00a0MS-DOS FAT and in options select Master Boot Record.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can do the same on PC using EX-FAT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sometimes the steps and options are little different if the hard drive is more than 2 tb (and sometimes a 2tb harddrive wont even show up on some computers even if the drive is formatted correctly). \u00a0Sometimes you&#8217;ll use GUID rather than Master Boot Record and sometimes you&#8217;ll use\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FAT32.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[NOTE: Western Digital does not recommend, or support,\u00a0multiple\u00a0hard drive\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">partitions<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> because, according to Western Digital, the drive becomes less stable and corruption is more likely to occur.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some readers here at the WOBIK blog may believe that most people already knows that stuff. \u00a0However, that&#8217;s simply not that case and as I&#8217;ve pointed out in the foregoing most of the calls which I received were identified, after listening to the customer, as format problems.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sometimes this also included initializing the disk and also switching the disk from offline to online. \u00a0Sometimes a customer would ask about data recovery and I would direct them to search Google for free data recovery software (although I wasn&#8217;t permitted to recommend any specific software by name) .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In any event, those are the types of problems which prompted <strong>Sonya\u00a0Rodolfo-Sioson<\/strong> to call me at Western Digital technical support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At some point during the call she mentioned that she used to live in Iowa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I informed her that I, myself was from Iowa. \u00a0She then indicated that her daughter was a student at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. \u00a0I told her that my brother was also a student at the very same university. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sonya told me that her daughter, Miya Rodolfo-Sioson,\u00a0was left paralyzed\u00a0after the 1991 shooting at the University of Iowa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On November 1st 1991 a Chinese student named Gang Lu (pictured below) at the University of Iowa in Iowa City (the old capital of Iowa) opened up fire using a\u00a0.38 caliber <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Gang-Lu-Chinese-Iowa-School-shooting-1991-Lucas-Daniel-Smith1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5554\" alt=\"Gang Lu Chinese Iowa School shooting 1991 Lucas Daniel Smith\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Gang-Lu-Chinese-Iowa-School-shooting-1991-Lucas-Daniel-Smith1.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>revolver and killed five people and seriously injured another student named\u00a0Miya Rodolfo-Sioson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gang Lu was born in Beijing (or Peking), China and\u00a0was a graduate student in physics at the University of Iowa. \u00a0He received his doctoral degree in May, 1991<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lu was competing for an academic award (which included a $1,000 prize) called the\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">D.C. Spriestersbach\u00a0Dissertation Prize<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. He\u00a0believed that his dissertation was going to win the prize. His dissertation was titled,\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Study of the &#8220;Critical Ionization Velocity&#8221; Effect by Particle-in-Cell Simulation.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He didn&#8217;t win. \u00a0A\u00a0physics student named Linhua Shan won the award and the prize money. I&#8217;m not sure if it was $1,000 or $2,500. \u00a0I know that in 2014 it is $2,500 but back in 1991 it may have been $1,000. \u00a0It was probably $2,500 even in 1991 but I&#8217;ve seen both numbers cited in written accounts of the shooting. \u00a0Readers are welcome to investigate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On November 1st 1991 Gang Lu walked into the University of Iowa campus and shot dead the following individuals (including the student who won the award):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-5559\" alt=\"University of Iowa 1991 school shooting\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-1024x725.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-1024x725.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gang Lu then murdered the\u00a0Vice President for Academic Affairs who had denied his appeal for the<\/span>\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">D.C. Spriestersbach\u00a0Dissertation Prize.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Vice President for Academic Affairs was a woman named\u00a0T. Anne Cleary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">She was a white American but, incredibly, she too was born in China (just as Gang Lu was). \u00a0T. Anne Cleary was born in\u00a0Shanghi, China and was the daughter of a missionary father. \u00a0 At the University she was well known for her love of helping students from China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gany Lu shot her in the head with his .38 caliber revolver. \u00a0She died the following day:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-T-Anne-Cleary.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5560\" alt=\"University of Iowa 1991 school shooting T Anne Cleary\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-T-Anne-Cleary.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-T-Anne-Cleary.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/University-of-Iowa-1991-school-shooting-T-Anne-Cleary-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before shooting T. Anne\u00a0Cleary he (Gang Lu) spoke with a student named\u00a0Miya Rodolfo-Sioson who was working as a temp assistant for T. Anne\u00a0Cleary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After Gang Lu shot T. Anne Cleary in the face\u00a0he then turned around and fired on Miya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Miya was shot in the mouth and spinal cord. \u00a0Minutes later Gang Lu shot himself and died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Miya was paralyzed and became a quadriplegic:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Miya-Rodolfo-Sioson-1993-1994-University-of-Iowa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5562\" alt=\"Miya Rodolfo Sioson 1993 1994 University of Iowa\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wasobamaborninkenya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Miya-Rodolfo-Sioson-1993-1994-University-of-Iowa.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Miya Rodolfo-Sioson was born in the Philippines in 1968 and raised in Ames, Iowa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Following the death of their father, Miya and her three older brothers were raised in a single-parent home by their mother, Sonya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Miya Rodolfo-Sioson was an incredible woman. \u00a0In May of 2007, Miya was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer.
