Attorney Jill A. Pryor has attracted sporadic attention in the national news the last few years. \u00a0A brief and very limited background in regards to the last few years of Pryor’s political life is provided below:<\/span><\/p>\n

On March 22nd 1990<\/strong>\u00a0Judge Stanley Francis Birch, Jr. was\u00a0nominated by\u00a0George H. W. Bush for the\u00a0United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Birch was confirmed by the\u00a0US Senate\u00a0on May 11th 1990<\/strong> and received his commission on May 14th 1990<\/strong>. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0retired\u00a0from judicial service on August 29th 2010<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

That legal office or seat is still vacant today (i.e., August 7th 2014).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jill A. Pryor was nominated on February 16 2012<\/strong> by Barack H. Obama to serve as a\u00a0Circuit Judge\u00a0on the\u00a0United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, to replaced Judge Stanley Francis Birch, Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n

Georgia Senators (both are Republicans) Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson blocked Pryor’s nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pryor was nominated again, this time on January 3rd 2013<\/strong>, by Barack H. Obama\u00a0to serve\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0Circuit Judge\u00a0on the\u00a0United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, to replaced Judge Stanley Francis Birch, Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 13th 2014<\/strong> Jill A. Pryor and\u00a0Julie E. Carnes (Carnes also\u00a0to be a United States Circuit Judge for the Eleventh Circuit)\u00a0received a hearing before the full panel of the\u00a0United States Senate Judiciary Committee.\u00a0 Video of the entire hearing can be viewed at<\/span>\u00a0http:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/meetings\/judicial-nominations-2014-05-13<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

On July 30th 2014 <\/strong>the\u00a0US Senate Majority Leader\u00a0Harry Reid\u00a0(Democrat – Nevada) motioned to invoke<\/span>\u00a0cloture<\/span><\/em>\u00a0on Pryor’s nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n

On<\/span> July 31st 2014<\/span><\/strong> the US Senate voted 58-33 for <\/span>cloture<\/span><\/em> on Pryor’s nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n

A confirmation vote has been scheduled for September 8th 2014<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE<\/span><\/strong>: \u00a0<\/span>The Legislative Reorganization Act of 1970<\/span><\/em>\u00a0requires that the US Congress (House and Senate) take a break \u201cnot later than July 31 of each year,\u201d or in an odd-numbered year \u201cthat Friday in August which occurs at least thirty days before the first Monday in September (Labor Day) of such year to the second day after Labor Day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year Congress closed down on August 1st – the first Friday in August.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jill A. Pryor is currently a\u00a0Georgia\u00a0attorney and\u00a0has served on the State Bar of Georgia Board of Governors and on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Legal Services Program. She has served as President of the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers and as Chair of the State Bar of Georgia’s Appellate Practice Section.<\/span><\/p>\n
