Saint Nicholas Day<\/b> is observed on the 5th or 6th of December in Western Christian countries and on the 19th of December in Eastern Christian countries using the old Church Calendar.<\/p>\n

It appears that Santa Claus here in the US and in the UK derive from Saint Nicholas.\u00a0 The name Santa Claus itself is evidently derived in part from the Dutch Sinterklaas<\/b><\/i> (the saint’s name in that language).\u00a0 It should also be noted that in Swiss folklore, St. Nicholas is known as\u00a0Samichlaus<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n

Saint Nicholas is sometimes accompanied by Krampus<\/b><\/i>\u00a0 who might be described as a bad Santa Claus who scares & punishes children who have misbehaved.<\/p>\n
