But the Bernie Sanders site still proudly<\/a> boasts the op-ed with the closing comments,\u00a0“These days, the American dream is more apt to be realized in South America, in places such as Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina, where incomes are actually more equal today than they are in the land of Horatio Alger. Who’s the banana republic now?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what the Bernie Dream<\/a> is like in Venezuela.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of every three people in Venezuela is struggling to put enough food on the table to meet minimum nutrition requirements as the nation\u2019s severe economic contraction and political upheaval persists, according to a study published Sunday by the U.N. World Food Program.<\/p>

A nationwide survey based on data from 8,375 questionnaires reveals a startling picture of the large number of Venezuelans surviving off a diet consisting largely of tubers and beans as hyperinflation renders many salaries worthless.<\/p>

The survey found that 74% of families have adopted \u201cfood-related coping strategies,\u201d such as reducing the variety and quality of food they eat. Sixty percent of households reported cutting portion sizes in meals, 33% said they had accepted food as payment for work and 20% reported selling family assets to cover basic needs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
