This is the fundamental question.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, if \u201canti-infidel\u201d hostility is inherent to Islam itself, then the conflict becomes existential\u2014a true clash of civilizations, with no easy fixes and lots of ugly implications along the horizon.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of this truism, those whose job it is to whitewash Islam\u2019s image in the West insist on the opposite\u2014that all difficulties are temporal and not rooted to innate Islamic teachings.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter Shariah: What Everyone Needs to Know<\/strong>, co-authored by John Esposito and Natana J. Delong-Bas. \u00a0The authors\u2019 goal is to exonerate Shariah, which they portray as enshrining \u201cthe common good (maslahah), human dignity, social justice, and the centrality of the community\u201d from Western criticism or fear, which they say is based solely on \u201cmyth\u201d and \u201csensationalism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to its subtitle, then, John Esposito\u2019s\u00a0 and Natana J. Delong-Bas\u2019s Shariah is not \u201cwhat everyone needs to know\u201d; rather, it is what non-Muslims need to believe in order to give Shariah\u2014which is fundamentally hostile to all persons and things un-Islamic\u2014a free pass. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
