The Wall Street Journal<\/a> columnist Kimberly A. Strassel has just conferred her \u201cAdult of the Year Award\u201d on a man who deserves it, Attorney General William Barr<\/a>. And Ms. Strassel writes with sufficient distance from the swamp to be taken seriously. Her column, titled \u201cPotomac Watch,\u201d is, I am told, composed from her lair in Alaska. That ought to insulate her from the swamp\u2019s fumes and from Wall Street<\/a>\u2019s, too.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Strassel in her award-conferring column noted that upon being nominated for attorney general by President Donald Trump in December 2018 \u201che received the respect that he deserves.\u201d Official Washington was quick to note Mr. Barr\u2019s years of nonpartisan facility with the law observable in years spent at the Justice Department, at the CIA and in private practice. He was known as a serious student of the law and of the U.S. Constitution. All agreed he would not be anyone\u2019s toady.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet Ms. Strassel notes that his honeymoon is over. He has begun to be \u201cvilified precisely because he has maintained an impartial view of the Justice Department and has kept his promises.\u201d This demonstrated integrity by the attorney general has \u201ccommenced one of the more obvious, not to mention nasty, delegitimization campaigns in modern Beltway history.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Official Washington has been yapping at the attorney general\u2019s appointment of John Durham \u2014 a prosecutor of squeaky-clean reputation \u2014 to investigate the FBI\u2019s probe into the 2016 Trump campaign. It became \u201chysterical\u201d when the attorney general stated \u201chis own view\u201d that the Inspector General\u2019s December report confirmed that, as Mr. Barr put it, the FBI suspicions about the 2016 campaign were \u201cinsufficient to justify the steps taken\u201d by the country\u2019s top cops.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
