C<\/strong>ARACAS \u2013 Venezuela, my home country, has it all: beautiful and breathtaking landscapes, abundant resources, even unique wonders of nature like the <\/strong>Angel Falls<\/strong><\/a> or the <\/strong>Catatumbo Lightning<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yet if you\u2019ve heard our name in the news recently, it\u2019s as the subject of tragedy:\u00a0toilet paper shortages<\/a><\/em>, desperate people scavenging through\u00a0garbage<\/a><\/em>\u00a0to find food for their families,\u00a0bread lines<\/a><\/em>, a systemic failure of our\u00a0public utilities<\/a><\/em>, dogs\u00a0flayed<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in broad daylight for meat,\u00a0corruption<\/a><\/em>, lack of proper\u00a0medicine<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0health<\/a><\/em>\u00a0access,\u00a0weighing\u00a0<\/a><\/em>stacks of cash, and so much more.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It saddens me to say that it\u2019s true, all of it, a product of 20 years of socialism.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was barely eleven years old when Hugo\n Ch\u00e1vez began his first term in 1999. When this \u201cBolivarian Revolution\u201d \nstarted to change the constitution and morph our laws I was just an \nintroverted child that had just moved to the capital of the country, \nfascinated by video games, cartoons, and Power Rangers and with an \noveractive imagination.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This perpetual revolution has laid down a status quo in the country that often forces you to lose your personal aspirations, to cast away your future, hopes, and dreams; it changes you in many ways until you\u2019re no longer a citizen \u2014 you\u2019re merely a survivor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
