Leprosy, also known as Hansen\u2019s disease, is rarely seen \nin the United States, but cases continue to emerge in Los Angeles \nCounty, a new report says.<\/p>

\u201cHansen\u2019s disease still exists, and we need to educate medical \nstudents and physicians,\u201d coauthor Dr. Maria Teresa Ochoa from Keck \nMedical Center of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, \ntold Reuters Health by email.<\/p>

Dr. Ochoa and colleagues identified 187 patients with the disease in a\n review of medical records from their leprosy clinic spanning 1973 to \n2018. Most patients were Latino, originating from Mexico, and they \nexperienced a median delay in diagnosis of more than three years, the \nteam reports JAMA Dermatology, online August 7.<\/p>

Multibacillary leprosy (MB) cases outnumbered paucibacillary leprosy \n(PB) cases by nearly eight to one (88.6% vs. 11.4%, respectively), and \nLatino patients were more likely than non-Latino patients to have MB, as\n were patients from Central or South America (versus other regions).<\/p>………………………………………………..<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
