One the strangest features of our political life in the United States today is the reckless abandon of our rhetoric. \u201cOh, that\u2019s because Donald Trump has debased political discourse,\u201d you say. \u201cHe calls women \u2018dogs,’ he refers to Kim Jong-un as \u2018Rocket Man,\u2019 he says the press is \u2018fake news\u2019 and the \u2018enemy of the people,\u2019\u201d etc., etc.<\/em><\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not the whole story, is it?\u00a0 Some diligent scribe should do a little historical digging and tabulate where, in each case of rhetorical Trumpery, the insults and opprobrium started.\u00a0 Did Donald Trump start the abuse?\u00a0 Or did his targets open hostilities?<\/em><\/p>\n

In many, maybe most (maybe all) cases I suspect you will find that Trump\u2019s invectives were rejoinders, i.e., responses to earlier provocations and expressions of contempt.\u00a0 Trump made fun of \u201clow-energy Jeb,\u201d but wasn\u2019t that after Jeb said some pretty disagreeable things about Trump?<\/em><\/p>\n

I suspect that, come 2024, when President Trump completes his second successful term, Americans will indeed look back, but to the election of Barack Obama and the prospect of a second President Clinton in 2016. They will then wonder how they could have been so misguided as to have elected a naive, anti-American race-hustler like Barack Obama not once but twice, and they will thank their lucky stars that they dodged the bullet of a Hillary Clinton administration, which would have completed the anti-freedom agenda of the deep state and assured generations of economic lassitude and dependency.<\/em><\/p>\n
