\u201cWe can’t continue to allow China to rape our country, and that\u2019s what they\u2019re doing.\u201d That was candidate Donald Trump back in April of\u00a0 2016. As he also said, in reference to China, \u201cwe\u2019re like the piggy bank that\u2019s being robbed.\u201d<\/a> If that seems a stretch, consider the case of Ruopeng Liu.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Chinese student enrolled at Duke University in 2006 and in 2007 he became a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Dr. David Smith, developer of \u201cmetamaterials.\u201d These function as an \u201cinvisibility cloak\u201d that can make objects invisible to microwave signals.<\/em><\/p>\n

Liu brought in two researchers from China, and during their stay at Duke they took photographs of the lab and its contents, as NBC noted<\/a> \u201cfocusing on the apparatus that allows scientists to measure the cloak.\u201d They took everything back to China, where they built an exact replica in Liu\u2019s previous lab.<\/em><\/p>\n

Smith said it sounded like theft and the FBI agreed, though no charges were filed. Some observers wondered if the Chinese government had tasked Liu to grab Smith\u2019s intellectual property but in an interview Liu laughed and called the charge \u201cridiculous.\u201d <\/a>\u00a0Liu is now worth a reported $2.7 billion and touted as the Elon Musk of China.<\/em><\/p>\n
