The\u00a0United States Supreme Court upheld President Trump\u2019s temporary ban on travel<\/a>\u00a0to the United States of foreign nationals from several countries considered to be prone to terrorism who cannot be adequately vetted, creating a potential threat to the national security of the United States. The third iteration of the ban, issued in the form of a\u00a0presidential proclamation<\/a>, initially restricted travel from eight countries, six of which on the original list are predominantly Muslim. The countries on the initial list were Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad, Venezuela and North Korea. Chad was later removed from the list.\u00a0\u00a0Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., writing for a 5-4 majority, concluded that the president\u2019s alleged anti-Muslim statements cited by the plaintiffs challenging the ban were irrelevant in determining the constitutionality of a presidential directive that was \u201cneutral on its face.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Justice Roberts\u2019 opinion provides an invaluable lesson as to the proper role that the judiciary is supposed to play in our constitutional system of checks and balances and separation of powers.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe proclamation is expressly premised on legitimate purposes: preventing entry of nationals who cannot be adequately vetted and inducing other nations to improve their practices,\u201d Justice Roberts wrote. It addressed \u201ca matter within the core of executive responsibility.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
