Soon-Shiong met with The Times staff for the first time on April 13 and said he bought the paper to stop Tronc from closing the Washington bureau and initiating another round of layoffs. He said the newsroom would move out of its rented space \u2014 and downtown Los Angeles for the first time in 137 years \u2014 to a building in El Segundo next to Los Angeles International Airport. He said he has a lifelong admiration of newspapers and journalists and promised an era of stability.<\/em><\/p>\n

He described the Los Angeles Times as a linchpin to a sprawling region and a \u201cfamily legacy\u201d \u2014 once the Chandlers\u2019 and, now, his.<\/em><\/p>\n
