Since we’ve been talking about the esteemed Tom Mboya in our last three (3) reports here at the WOBIK blog we’ve decided it only appropriate to point out that he, like Obama Sr., did not know his true and correct date of birth.
Obama, Sr. used two different dates of birth on his own passports.
In his 1959-issued passport he used June 18th 1934 as his date of birth. To view passport click here.

Some skeptics have put forth claims indicating that the certified (2009) copy of Barack Hussein Obama II’s 1961 Coast Province General Hospital, Mombasa, British Protectorate of Kenya certificate of birth is a forgery on grounds that the date of birth given for the father (Obama, Sr.) consists of nothing more but the year 1936 (day and month not listed).
Skeptics assert that the ‘forger’ couldn’t risk guessing at the month and day. It appears that back in 2009 there weren’t yet any online references to Obama, Sr.’s full date of birth.
As of 2014 there are at least four (4) official (i.e., found on official documents) dates of birth for Obama, Sr:
1. 1936
2. 1934
3. June 18th 1934
4. June 18th 1936
In any event, there’s nothing atypical or significant about a person born in Sub-Saharan Africa not knowing their date of birth. (Especially if you were born 80 years ago in the 1930’s.)
For example, Tom Mboya (Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya) did not really and truly know his exact date of birth. See pages five (5) thru six (6) of the book, Tom Mboya: The Man Kenya wanted to forget (1982), by David Goldsworthy:
When he was baptized at Kilimambogo Mission on 22 April 1932, the Catholic fathers estimated his age at about two years. Mboya himself, however, always insisted that 15 August 1930 was his date of birth. And for lack of any known alternative, this date must be accepted. By Luo custom the infant was called Odhiambo, signifying that he had been born in the evening. His other names accrued to him over a period.

Tom Mboya was assassinated on July 5th 1969 in Nairobi, Kenya.

He was a product of the ‘African Airlifts’ that saw many Kenyans land in American universities. While we were colonised by the British, Kenyans looked to the ‘land of the free and home of the brave’ for higher education through the airlifts of the 1950s. It was these ‘airlift graduates’ who helped spur growth on returning home.
Mineral rich DR Congo went to the dogs because it had less than 10 university graduates as human capital to manage its vast mineral wealth and natural resources.
Kenya skirted the route taken by Congo with airlift graduates like Barack Obama Snr, whose immortality rests on the outcome of one of his five failed marriages, which produced the first African American president, Barack Obama. Obama could have ended up being called Baraka Obama, had his dad not changed his name to Barack!
Unfortunately, Obama Snr never lived to see the son he abandoned become the world’s most powerful man.
Barack Obama Snr, a Harvard-educated economist, was a study in self destruction and not necessarily because he lived in Jericho estate—a hood famous for the southward plummeting of its breed.
Peter Firstbrook notes in his 2010 book, The Untold Story of an African Family, that the brilliant party animal and beneficiary of the 1959 airlift led a complicated life after he returned to Kenya after six years in USA.
The proud Central Bank of Kenya economist wrote Problems Facing Our Socialism, a critique of the Kenyatta administration’s lack of foresight in economic planning in the East African Journal. Good old Jomo (who once summoned him for a dress down) was miffed by the greenhorn who liked swilling whisky (and often directed waiters to bill Mboya or Oginga Odinga for the drinks!).
Mboya, who always had Obama’s back, was assassinated in 1969, leaving the man who often wondered why he was not the Central Bank Governor, exposed, as were most Luos at the time.

Arrogant Obama Snr was sacked from the Central Bank on Kenyatta’s orders, Firstbrook informs us.
The presidential blacklisting meant he couldn’t land any high profile job. His drinking problem worsened. The already bad driver got involved in numerous accidents, even though that was not the reason his third wife Ruth Nidesand left him in 1971—the year the young Obama met his dad for the first and last time. Barack Obama Snr was to later fatally wrap his car round a tree after a night of drinking in November 1982. He was just 46 at the time of his death.

I’m not certain but there is chance that Tom Mboya’s wife Pamela Arwa Mboya (born Pamela Arwa Odede) did not know her own exact date of birth.
It appears that she was born in Kenya in the year 1939.
She studied sociology at Makerere University in Uganda.
She went on to attend Western College for Women (which was active 1855 thru 1974 in Oxford, Ohio). She graduated with a degree in Sociology.
Pamela was of the Lou tribe and so after her husband was assassinated (1969) she married his brother (Lou tribe tradition). The marriage did not last long but they did have a child together who is named Thomas Mboya, Jr.
Prior to Pamela’s second marriage she had four children with Tom Mboya, Sr: Maureen, Luke, Peter and Patrick.
Pamela was the Permanent Representative of Kenya (appointed by Kenyan President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi) to HABITAT which was the United Nations’ agency on Human Shelter/Settlements.
Pamela’s father, Walter Odede (died in 1974), was among the first Kenyans to earn a university degree in veterinary science. This is interesting, I’d like to find out the name of the university.
The esteemed Pamela Mboya died from cancer on January 26th 2009 at a hospital in South Africa. She was buried on February 7th 2009 in Kenya.
Anything that she may have known about Barack Obama, Sr. is probably now lost forever.
