Cedar Rapids, Iowa flood 06.01.2013. Underwater bike ride on Cedar River. Lucas Daniel Smith.

I filmed this yesterday (o6.01.2013) afternoon at approximately 2:00 pm and onwards in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with my GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition.

This was filmed on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids along the Cedar River Trail.  There was a residential neighborhood, now known as Czech Village (Little Bohemia in the 19th century) and which dates back to the 1850s, near the banks of where this video begins but that neighborhood was destroyed in the 2008 flood and all but just a few houses have been demolished since.

I believe the river, yesterday at the time of filming, was between 18 to 20 feet above normal water level which is insignificant and unexceptional when compared to the 500 year flood of 2008 where water levels submerged entire houses (some completely underwater), buildings, the downtown area and entire neighborhoods.

Here are a few pics from the 2008 Cedar Rapids 500 year flood:

    Awesome raw adventure footage! FUN!

While watching the video, I kept thinking –

Lucas, bicycle and new GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition camera are all going to suddenly sink down into some really deep, washed out section of the trail and disappear forever!

However, I should have known you would come through it all somehow, unscathed.

    – because, after all, you previously survived this:

  2. Cedar River in Cedar Rapids supposedly crested today (Sunday) at 18.23 feet above normal water level.

The 2008 flood crested at 31.12 feet above normal water level.
